Learning Language Arts Through Literature (LLATL), published by Common Sense Press, is a complete, literature-based language arts curriculum spanning First Grade through High School (indicated by different color books, such as The Blue Book for 1st Grade, and The Gold Book series for High School). Its central philosophy is to make language arts instruction attractive, meaningful, and effective by using real literature—not isolated basal stories or workbook drills—as the foundation for all lessons. This method aims to foster a genuine appreciation of quality literature while developing students' lifetime communication skills.
The curriculum provides integrated instruction across all essential language arts skills within a single program. This comprehensive approach covers reading, vocabulary, spelling, phonics (at lower levels), grammar, penmanship, and writing, without the need for separate resources for each subject. The literature component is crucial, as students use these real books as writing models, providing real-world context for grammar rules and writing mechanics, which significantly strengthens skill retention compared to isolated workbook pages. Regular quizzes and assessments are included to check comprehension and ensure mastery.
LLATL utilizes an easy-to-use format for a 36-week school year. For grades 1–8, the curriculum includes a conversational Teacher's Book requiring little prep time and a Student Activity Book designed to minimize copying and keep all work organized. A key teaching tool is the use of dictation (and copying at lower levels), where students study passages from literature to integrate skills in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and writing. This method trains students to look for details and strive for accuracy. The program is designed to move students gradually toward independent learning by the third grade.
