Layers of Learning
Layers of Learning is a homeschool curriculum company focused on creating flexible, family-style courses that allow all children in a family to learn together, regardless of age. This "uncurriculumy" approach covers core subjects beyond basic literacy and math, including History, Geography, Science, Arts, and Language Arts (via the supplemental Writer's Workshop). The curriculum is designed by long-time homeschoolers and is highly adaptable, allowing parents, whom they refer to as "mentors," to direct the learning based on their children's needs and interests. The curriculum does not adhere to specific grade levels but is intended for all ages to use simultaneously, offering a full four-year chronological cycle for core subjects. For instance, History rotates through Ancient History, Middle Ages, Colonial, and Modern World periods. Science is experiment-based and rotates through Earth & Space, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Geography focuses on map skills and world cultures, and Arts explores various creative skills, history, and practice. The teaching methodology is activity-based, fun, and memorable, promoting hands-on engagement through a three-step process: (1) Library Research, where families use book lists and search terms provided in the unit to gather resources; (2) Explore, where the family completes hands-on projects selected from a variety of options; and (3) Show What You Know, where students demonstrate their learning through a writing assignment, game, quiz, or activity. The curriculum is affordable, utilizing single reusable unit books for all children, and primarily relies on library books and inexpensive household or craft supplies for the activities.
